Here it is…

…that free moment I’ve been looking for to write a blog post.

Wedding photoshoot #1 is in the books and everything went well. As with any outdoor wedding, there were several issues that had to be addressed on the fly. It was a good learning experience, for sure. I’m going through the post-processing phase now. I was really pleased with the bridal portraits that I did for this particular bridge - a few of those are up on the “portraits” section of Sandlapper Studio. Speaking of which, I’ve made some adjustments to the design of the SandlapperStudio site. Not really a re-design, just a good polishing on the look and a re-organization of some information. I’ve sold a couple of prints over the last few weeks, so that’s always good.

I have an engagement shoot coming up this Sunday at the Riverbanks Zoo for the couple getting married on August 16th. Their wedding is also outdoors, but it will be that will be a midday wedding instead of at sunset, as the wedding on Friday was. I’m also finishing up a few things for Japanese Pink Sauce and working on some web banners to promote the newly relaunched AthleteFocus.

That’s all the updates for now. Don’t look now, but the weekend is nearly upon us.

Vintage posters

Fact: vintage and wartime posters are really cool. It’s interesting to look back at the originals and see how some of these design elements are used today. Here’s a nice set that a co-worker sent me this morning.

April Showers and Portrait Sessions

Back in early April I wrote about taking portraits for an upcoming wedding. Here we are a month later and we were finally able to shoot this past weekend. Staying true to its reputation, almost every weekend in April was rainy. So every time we tried to schedule the portraits, they got rained out. I’m in the post-processing phase of the portraits as we speak and I’ll be shooting the wedding on Friday. I’ll try and get some of those up soon.

(You’ll have to pardon the lack of focus in some of these)

Thank you sir, may I have another?

Getting cheated makes me mad. Getting cheated and not being able to do much about it makes me a lot madder. From AdPulp (notice the bolded items):

Here’s Fortune’s list of most profitable companies

That’s “profitable” folks. From my economics class, if I remember correctly, profit equals total revenue less total costs. Just another thing to think about when I fill up the Camry @ $51 a tank.

Rockin’ the ’stocks

Today is the second day of breaking in a new pair of “Arizona” style Birkenstocks - an early birthday present from my wife. These are the second pair of this style of sandal that I’ve owned. The first pair lasted me at least one year of high school, through college and up until last summer. Over the winter, I forgot them out on our deck, so they succumbed to the elements and I was forbidden to even consider wearing them again. It’s true that other styles of sandals/flip flops might be more “in style.” But you can keep your Rainbows, your Reefs or whatever else might be “in” this season. I’ll take my Birkenstocks any day.

Fishing Story

Something you may not know about me - I like to fish. Our family has a pond out on some property that my Dad bought to grow pine trees. It’s stocked with bream, bass and catfish and it is a nice place to go to get away for a little while.

Anyway, Dad and I were out on the pond in our little green John boat (OT: anyone know why they are called John boats?) Saturday morning. It was a little chilly, with the sky being overcast and the wind had picked up. Plus, it was starting to drizzle. I was fishing on a new Bill Dance Zebco 33 rod and I had a purple rubber worm on my hook. These purple worms aren’t quite as long as the typical rubber worms, but they’ve been dynamite for me in our pond.

We have caught a few catfish in the past, which are naturally larger, but the largest bass we’ve pulled out of the pond is probably 3 pounds or so. I cast out near our dam, where we’ve had some decent luck with bass. Before I could even engage the rod, something had taken hold (I love it when that happens, BTW). By the way it was fighting, I thought it was a catfish. We got a quick look at the fish and by it’s size, we were even more sure of the type of fish. However, after a minute or two of fighting, it came back up and we got a better look - it was a big bass. Now, I’m notorious for getting a fish on the hook and then it finding a way off. I was scared it was going to happen again this time and I was going to lose this great fish, but after a few more minutes I got it into the boat. It was definitely the biggest bass we’ve caught in the pond and it’s the biggest non-catfish fresh-water fish I’ve ever caught. We took the measurements once we got home before Dad went to clean it - 5 pounds on the dot and 21 inches long. I’d say that it was a good day on the pond.

Flickr Video

In addition to photos, Flickr is now allowing users to upload short video as well. This has been met with a mixed response from the Flickr community. I don’t really understand what the fuss is about personally - if you don’t want to watch the videos, then don’t click on them. Maybe it’s the purists that are worried that the photo sharing site is getting even further away from its roots. Maybe people are worried that this is going to affect the performance of the website. I don’t think Flickr is ever really going to rival other video sharing sites out there (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), especially since videos are limited to 90 seconds. At the end of the day, the “meat and taters” of Flickr is still going to be photo sharing, end of story. As of now, only two of my contacts have uploaded videos @ one video apiece.

It will be interesting to follow and see if it really catches on.
